Streets of 1898

The streets of Whitehorse are beginning to look like they did back in the days of the Gold Rush of 1898. No, it’s not because of Sourdough Rendezvous and all the gaiety and period costumes. It is literally because of the streets.

Each year the City of Whitehorse dumbs countless tonnes of sand on the streets in order to keep them safer for both pedestrians and motorized traffic. At this time of year, as the snow melts, the sand mixes with the water and creates – you guessed it – mud … just like in the “Days of ’98.”

Steets of Whitehorse become muddy as the snow melts and the sand that has been dumped on them all winter mixes with the water.

And soon there will be drifts of yellow pollen mixed in with it. Ah-choo!
