The Guardian

She walked slowly behind him as he escorted her to the opening in the ice.

He stood steadfast, loyal and on-guard while she daintily slipped her head beneath the water; perhaps in search of a morsel.

Satiated, she stood and began waddling back toward open water and safety.

He followed, ever watchful, eying every motion as his lady made her way to the security of open water.

They reached the edge of the ice. He paused and stood tall; assuring her security as she slipped quietly into the silkiness.

They silently slipped away in the stillness.
